What Is the Background of The Founder?
Blaine Anderson is the founder and CEO of Dating by Blaine. While pursuing her degree at the University of Arizona, she provided dating advice to over 3,000 men, helping them find the perfect partners.
Business Pitch Episode Recap
Blaine asked the Sharks for $200,000 in exchange for 5% equity in her company. She explained her dating service to the Sharks and shared how it helps single men improve their love lives. Blaine used Mark Cuban and Barbara Corcoran as examples to demonstrate how to have a good conversation with a female partner.
Lori Greiner asked about the business’s sales and its timeline. Blaine responded that she started the business in mid-2020, with total sales of $2.2 million. Within the first 6 months, she made $22,000 in sales. In 2021, her sales reached $484,000, and in 2022, they grew to $1 million. She expects to achieve $1.5 million in sales in 2023.
Michael Rubin asked about the business model and service cost. Blaine explained that her primary offering, the Dating Masterclass, costs $1,295. The course is entirely online and mainly consists of pre-recorded video lessons.
Before starting her business, Blaine worked in the travel industry. However, when the pandemic hit, she lost her job overnight. It was her husband who suggested she create a course to share her dating knowledge. Blaine began by finding clients through dating apps and started coaching single men. Now, she is a leading figure in the dating coaching industry.
Michael believes that a dating coach business isn’t scalable. Blaine agrees with this but points out that her course is scalable. She sells a text course for $149 and one-on-one coaching for $6,295 for 45 minutes, which isn’t scalable.
Last year, she sold 900 courses. When Mark asked about the sales numbers for the text course, Blaine couldn’t provide an answer as she didn’t remember the exact number of text courses sold.
In 2022, the profit was under $500,000. Blaine used some of the profits to buy a car and build a home office. She is seeking help from the Sharks to establish herself as a brand face and to aid in the growth of her business.
Michael believes it’s not a scalable business, so he is out.
Mark Cuban is interested in the business but is out because Blaine only offered 2% equity.
Barbara thinks that Mark would be a better partner for the business, so she is out.
Lori says that Blaine believes female Sharks would be the best partners for her business, so she is out.
Kevin O’Leary thought 2% equity was too low and offered $100,000 for 15% equity. Mark Cuban suggested Blaine should make a better offer, so Blaine revised her offer to $100,000 for 8% equity. Mark countered with 10% equity, and Blaine accepted this offer.
