Business Pitch Episode Recap
Shelly appeared on Shark Tank with her two sons, Max and Clark, and asked the Sharks for $50,000 in exchange for 25% equity in her company. She demonstrated her poncho suit product, explaining that it functions as both a private changing room in public and a towel.
The good thing is that she patented her product and needs not only money but also the Sharks’ expertise to grow her business.
Daymond John wanted to know the making cost of the product, while Mark Cuban asked about the selling price. Shelly explained that it costs $6.50 to make one towel, she sells each unit for $9 at waterparks, and the retail price is $19.99.
Mark Cuban asked what the largest order from waterparks was, and Shelly replied that she received an order for 240 towels from California’s Legoland Park. So far, she has made total sales of only $15,000.
Kevin O’Leary said the sales are very low and that it’s a seasonal business, so he is out.
Shelly pointed out that this is a perfect bath towel for kids and there are thousands of waterparks in the United States. If focused on just 50 waterparks, it could potentially generate millions of dollars in sales within three months.
Robert Herjavec praised Shelly’s passion but mentioned he is not excited about the product and cannot invest in the business. Therefore, he is out.
Daymond John mentioned that sales are challenging and the company’s valuation of $200,000 is not justified by the sales. Shelly responded by sharing that she is currently in discussions with Disney.
Daymond offered $50,000 for a 50% equity stake in the company.
Lori Greiner said she saw herself in Shelly and could relate to her. She offered $50,000 for 25% equity.
As Shelly was about to accept Lori’s offer, Daymond John stepped in and offered $50,000 for 20% equity instead.
Mark Cuban said he saw potential in the business and believed it was worth more than $50,000 for 25% equity. Therefore, he offered $75,000 for 25% equity.
Lori pointed out that her offer was better than the others because she is the QVC Queen and a woman who understands Shelly’s perspective.
Daymond told Shelly that he knows the CEO of Six Flags, has worked with the CEOs of Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuybaby, and has been a vendor for JCPenney for 20 years.
He highlighted that this partnership could generate significant revenue. He matched Mark’s offer, proposing $75,000 for 20% equity.
Lori updated her offer to $75,000 for 25% equity.
Shelly discussed this with her husband and decided to accept Lori Greiner’s offer.
