Jennifer Stein-Bischoff is the Founder and CEO of Supermix Studio, a company she established in May 2021. She comes from a strong background in apparel design, having worked with Aeropostale, Inc. and Topsville. Jennifer also served as Chief Merchandising Officer at Topsville Inc. for two years.

Business Pitch Episode Recap

Jennifer asked the Sharks for $250,000 in exchange for 10% equity in her company. While explaining her custom-designed kids’ clothing brand, she highlighted that her platform offers over 500 patches, unique font styles, and various clothing styles. Kids can easily create their own favorite designs on the clothing by simply dragging and dropping these elements.

Jennifer showcased her clothing designs to the Sharks, and they found them unique and fancy. She explained that a basic jean jacket starts at $60, with additional charges of $15 to $20 for each custom patch added to the design.

The average production cost of a denim jacket is $13.75, while the retail price is $69. Similarly, the cost to make a sweatshirt is $7.05, with a retail price of $55. Jennifer also revealed that all her patches are 100% proprietary artwork, and she personally designs each one.

At the age of 28, Jennifer was hired by renowned American fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger as the Vice President of Design. Later, she joined Topsville Inc. as the Chief Merchandising Officer, where she realized that kids love designing their own clothes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, to keep her child engaged, she worked with them on tie-dyeing and adding patches to clothes. This experience sparked the idea for her business, Supermix Studio.

The company was launched in October 2022, and during the first holiday season from November to January 2023, it made total sales of $60,000. As of 2023, total sales have reached $110,000, but Jennifer revealed that the business has not yet turned a profit.

In the early stages of the business, Jennifer made her products available through a physical kiosk store for marketing purposes. Kevin O’Leary said, “I hate the kiosk idea.” Jennifer believed that the kiosk was a marketing strategy to reduce customer acquisition costs in the D2C (direct-to-consumer) model. Mark Cuban disagreed with Jennifer’s idea and decided to opt out.

Daymond John felt that the investment was too risky for him, so he decided to opt out.

Kevin does not like Jennifer’s retail business strategy, so he is out.

Lori Greiner and Robert Herjavec teamed up to offer $250,000 for 25% equity plus a 5% royalty until $250,000 is paid. Jennifer countered with $250,000 for 20% equity and a 2% royalty until $250,000 is paid. Robert then made a counteroffer of a 3.5% royalty until $250,000 is paid, which Jennifer accepted.
